A Quick Science Lesson on Today’s Precious Metal Compound—Silver Chloride

Silver chloride, with the molecular formula AgCl, has a molecular weight of 143.32. It appears as a white powder and is unstable, readily decomposing upon exposure to light, turning purplish and gradually darkening. At 25°C, its solubility in water is 1.93 mg/L. The presence of hydrochloric acid reduces its solubility in water. It is soluble in aqueous ammonia, sodium cyanide, sodium thiosulfate, and mercuric nitrate solutions. However, it is insoluble in ethanol and dilute hydrochloric acid.
